Armando Arpys Arévalo Carreño M.Sc.

PhD Candidate / Research Assistant

Laboratory Safety Representative

I have studied and collaborated in different universities in my academic career. Since my Bachelor's studies I have experienced interdisciplinary environments. I have studied an intensive Aeronautics Course in the Moscow Aviation Institue in Russia for the summer of 2006. I have always liked technology, and during the last year and a half of my Bachelor's studies, I discovered my attraction to Research & Development. I applied for a scholarship and won the Discovery Scholarship Award (2008) and Fellowship Award (2009) from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology "KAUST" in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. At KAUST I completed my Master degree in Mechanical Engineering in December 2010. Currently I am a PhD Student in the Electrical Engineering Department at KAUST, under the supervision of Dr. Ian G. Foulds. I am the Lab Safety Representative for my Research Group Laboratory (Electromechanical Microsystems & Polymer Integration Research "EMPIRe"). As member of the IEEE, I serve as vice-chairman of the IEEE Student Branch at KAUST.

Research Interests

I am interested in Aerospace and the challenges for humans to travel for long periods of time in the outer space. My interests in Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and Nanotechnology are focused in Micro-fabrication of actuators, sensors and characterization of materials. During my Masters degree I focused my research in micro-robots and characterization of the SU-8 process.
